The Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation
The Gösta Serlachius Fine Arts Foundation has a long tradition of museum work. In 1933, the industrialist Gösta Serlachius (1876–1942) established a foundation bearing his name to look after his extensive art collection. Museum operations started in 1945 when the Foundation rented a section of the ground floor of the family home Joenniemi Manor from his widow Mrs Ruth Serlachius. The manor house and the surrounding gardens became the property of the Foundation in 1972. This was also the starting point for a determined effort to develop museum activities. Today, Serlachius Museum Gösta is one of the top art museums in Finland – its collections are also of broader Nordic and European significance.
In 2003, the Foundation expanded its activities by opening a historical museum alongside the art museum. Serlachius Museum Gustaf is housed in the former head offices of the Serlachius concern and its exhibits focus on the history of industry in Mänttä in addition to which changing exhibitions are also arranged. The carefully renovated museum building, decorated with original wall paintings by Lennart Segerstråle and lynx-themed sculptures by Jussi Mäntynen, forms an impressive architectural totality.
